Largo, Maryland - January 13, 2009 - Go On Girl! Book Club will receive the Literary Legends award at the first annual Black Book Clubs Rock event on Saturday, June 20th at the Radisson Hotel in Largo, Maryland. The event honors book clubs and literary supporters that have made a positive impact on the African-American community through their service. Honorees exemplify community spirit, leadership, volunteerism and making a difference in the lives of authors and readers. Go On Girl! Book Club Co-Founders Lynda Johnson and Tracy Mitchell-Brown will accept the award in person.

Tifany Jones, founder of the Sistah Confessions Book Club and event organizer stated, "As a book club founder I personally know the hard work and dedication that is required to make a club successful. Many of us strive for the longevity and sisterhood clearly demonstrated by Go On Girl! Book Club."

Former Rain by Vanessa Miller

Although this book was written several years ago I felt the relevance of today through all of Vanessa Miller's characters in her re-released book Former Rain.

There was Issac and Nina. Once lovers, now enemies, and not just for him beating her down after she stepped foot out of an abortion clinic. This couple's story took you on a rollar coaster ride throughout the entire book, but what gripped me was the story behind Issac's pain. His chosen profession was about power and the ability to control others, but the reasons why he needed that validation sent chills up my spine. It made me question how our past really does shape our future, and if not careful, with the help of God, it will ultimately destroy us all.

Then you have Kenneth and Elizabeth. This married couple, like 50% of society, are headed for divorce unless they realize the error of their ways. Each openly blames each other for the failed marriage, but when Elizabeth decides to live for God she wants her marriage restored. Unfortunately, this is not as simple as saying the Prayer of Salvation. Like any wound Elizabeth and Kenneth's marriage needs time to heal, but will Elizabeth's struggle with submission continue to infect the marriage? Especially, if she does decide to put that sugar in his gas tank!!

I was blown away by Vanessa's writing style and her in-your-face characters. Although I enjoyed the entire book, and will read all her works, my favorite scenes are those that describe Heaven and hell.

Three Months by Ben Hinson

There is nothing certain in life but death, taxes, and now AIDS!

The truth of this statement is explored in Ben Hinson's debut novel Three Months. It begins as do most books with a story of another reckless character whose ideal of success is a great job, house, and an even greater time between the sheets with various women. But John, the main character in Three Months soon learns his ideals need an extensive makeover.

When an evening with a beautiful woman turns into an ugly living nightmare, John comes face to face with the reality of HIV/AIDS and how he put himself at risk each time he decided to be "successful", which were many! His world comes to a three month standstill when his late night rendezvous confirms the unthinkable, she is HIV positive.

Now John, who tried to control the situation by using protection but didn't count on it being defective, is riddled with the question we all should ask ourselves, "Do I have HIV/AIDS?" The answer to his question is delayed three months. Giving him enough time to wish, hope, pray, and sometimes accept the responsibility that whatever the outcome his actions put him there.

Ben Hinson may have started writing this book with the intentions to learn more about this virus that claimed the life of his friend, but in the end he helped shed light on an issue we have all to comfortably forgotten about. Three Months does something our society has failed to do... It makes us all accountable for our actions. I highly recommend this book along with a visit to your doctor for a blood test!

Hello Everyone,

I've had a blast interviewing various authors throughout the year on the Sistah Confessions Radio Show. The shows have been interesting to say the least and very informative.

Most of the authors are new to the lit world. Many are self published. Now on to the news...

I was contacted by a publisher concerning Vonda Howard, an author recently featured on my show. He wants to get in contact with her regarding an anthology. Can we all say CONGRATULATIONS! This is such good news and I am excited.

I started Sistah Confessions as a way for authors to showcase their work and gather interests from reader, publishers, and the like. God is truly good. So if you are an author, keep writing and networking. It only takes connecting with one person to help you reach your dreams!!

Will the Real Women of God Please Stand Up!

This is so off topic, but the burning on the inside of me has to let it out...

On my way to work this morning I thought about my position in this world. For so long I've wanted what most of us want and that's to be seen. We all want some type of recognition, because it's a form of acceptance, but when we do things through on our own accord there is no power behind it.

Where is the power in our women today? Some of us think it is between our legs or the ability to turn heads when we walk in a room, but what happens after that? When the beauty fades or the next young thang comes walking up in the club that used to be your stomping ground? What happens then?

As a woman, I know the power that lies on the inside of you. We are creatures of great influence, but are we using it for His glory or our own? Ladies, this world is hurting. There are children out here looking for us to stand for what matter most and that is God. I know somedays it seems like He is not there, but He is. The relationship we need to have with Him is always there waiting for us to turn on our faith to receive it. It's like a light switch. Even when the light is off there is still power running through those wires.

Even when you are off, thinking its all about you, there is still power running through the inside of you just waiting for the moment for you to turn it on.

Where are the real women of God? I need you. This world need you. Our children need you. Please stand, and if you get knocked down along the way, please take your rightful position and STAND again. Storms will come, but they are designed to build resistance and make you stronger.

Will you stand with me?

Dear Listeners,

Since Sistah Confessions’ introduction to the literary world, I have met some wonderful people. The authors and guests that I had the chance to interview and connect with have opened my eyes to social issues pertaining to literature and my personal life. I have come to realize that what I do as a host is a valuable extension of who I am as a person. Each word that I speak or listen to is a direct reflection of my beliefs and values. Therefore I refuse allow my mirror to be distorted by beliefs and values that I do not embrace.

After careful evaluation, I decided to revise the mission of Sistah Confessions. I believe that words have the power to bring life or death to their listeners. Sistah Confessions’ vision is twofold:

·Provide a forum that will allow and encourage words that shed light on the dark issues of this world.

·Use the confessions of our authors and special guests to heal, inspire, and elicit change that will transform our lives.

Please bear with me as I take a hiatus to navigate Sistah Confessions to a destination with greater meaning, depth, and purpose. Until then, light up the darkness!

Just an update on SC...Yes, we are still active. The show is doing exceedingly well and going above and beyond what I'd ever imagined, but that is what I prayed for:) The next step is to make this a physical club in addition to virtual. All work is being done in addition to my move. Tired~YES. Worth it~YES!

My goal is to blog about our upcoming guests on the radio show until I settle down and have time for more. Let's see how well this best laid plan will go.

The World According to Francis Ray

My show with Mrs. Ray last week was phenomenal. We had such a wonderful time. I sent her a few questions to answer for me and her fans all around the world. I hope you enjoy. Don't forget to check out the very short story I asked her to finish. You'll see why she is a master at what she does!

1. How much, if any, has the literary industry changed since your first novel to now?
The literary industry has changed dramatically. Three major changes - the merging of publishing houses, the disappearance of book wholesalers, and the closing of independent book stores - all of which makes is more difficult to sell a book, then once the book is sold the wholesale warehouse might take less copies, and with the closing of book stores your book will not be readily available. With the shaky economy and big chains like Borders in financial trouble it does not bode well for the publishing industry. Although in the past when hard times hit, people purchased more books, but gas wasn't $3.89 a gallon to get to the retail store.

2. Besides writing, what are your other passions?
After my family, I'd have to say that it would be my involvement with The Turning Point Legal Fund. I set up the fund in 2000 with the release of THE TURNING POINT to help women affected by domestic abuse restructure their lives. The main character in THE TURNING POINT (TROUBLE DON'T LAST ALWAYS) is a victim of domestic abuse. In doing the research for the book, the plight of these women touched my heart and showed me how blessed I was. I felt compelled to help.

My other two passions would be reading, and gardening. This afternoon I designed and planted a flower bed with stones, white and pink begonias, and Indian Hawthorne bushes. In another bed I added white, pink and red Dianthus. I have four beds to go.

3. If you had to stop writing today would you be satisfied with the contribution you made to the literary world? What would you miss?
Since I write slower with each book I've often thought of how I would feel if the stories just won't come anymore. I'd have to say that I would be proud of my literary contributions and be thankful for what I had accomplished.

I'd miss most the connection with the readers. Corresponding and talking with them has been wonderful.

4. Who would you love to write a book with, dead or alive, and why?
I've written books with Donna Hill, Rochelle Alers and Beverly Jenkins. I was honored to write with such talented ladies. I think one writer might be Francine Rivers who writes fantastic inspirational romances. Ms. Rivers being such emotions to the page.

5. How would you finish this paragraph?
Taffi grips the steering wheel until her knuckles turn white. She can't believe what she is seeing. Steve and Gloria, together, holding hands like a happy couple, but she knows the truth. She knows they are really...

miserable. It's an act because Steve loves her. He has told her so many times. If only Gloria wasn't so greedy and vindictive she'd give him a divorce he keeps asking for.

It takes all of Taffi's self control not to stop the car and tell Gloria off. What kind of woman keeps a man who doesn't want her? Steven has told her to be patience, but she is tired of sneaking around. Perhaps she should do it anyway. Steven might be angry at first but she knows just how to put a smile on his face. Slowing down, Taffi looks for a empty parking space.

Interesting To Say the Least

Whoa! Not only did my show with Lutishia Lovely have issues, but so did my show with the ladies from Central State University. We were able to knock it out, but i was hot. I mean, I know I don't have control over the technical aspects of the show, but I don't want it to reflect negatively on the image of SC. SC is about its business and when things come in to change that it makes me a little frustrated. However, I know with life things are bound to happen that are out of my control. I just have to press forward. So that is what I am going to do.

SC has officially relocated! With this comes major changes, but all will be for the better. Starting with a new day and time slot for the radio show. More info to follow, but Sistahs don't fret. Whatever doesn't kill us will only makes us stronger:)

A few of the guests have been rescheduled due the tech issues I have experienced with the Blog Talk format. New flyers and info will follow shortly.

Other than that, all is well with ya girl. I'm just trying to stay on the grind and positive. I believe SC has something to offer to the people and with your help I am going to give it to them.

Not Killing Us Softly

I'm Coming Out, I Want the World to Know It's not just what we say, but what we don't say...
In June 2005 I wrote an article about my depression for Essence magazine. I was not prepared for the reaction it generated. I received over 10,000 letters, over half of them from people "coming out" for the first time about their pain and depression. Complete strangers wrote to me because I was the safest person they could share with. Not friends, not family members, but me -- someone they didn't know! I also wasn't prepared for the intensity of my frustration as I came to understand how many Black women and men are suffering silently.

The folks who wrote to me were scared -- some of them terrified -- to breathe a word to anyone; they were paralyzed by the fear that no one would understand or accept them. Their fear was echoed in conversation upon conversation I had while traveling across the country giving talks about how we are doing -- about waking up in pain each day -- to audiences that ranged from CEOs to regular churchgoers. After my talks, person after person would come to me to confide that they, too, were "going through it."

Sometimes I would come home from these trips totally drained in my heart and soul, having heard stories like the one I heard from a man whose two sisters are home suffering from major depression. He can't talk about it, nor can his family, even though he's a respected physician and his brother is a well-regarded man of the cloth!

If I'm honest with myself, and with you, the fact is that I'm more like these folks than I care to admit. If then Essence editor in chief Diane Weathers hadn't sensed what I was going through and asked me to write the piece, I don't know how much longer it would have taken before I really told someone I was depressed -- or if I would ever have told anyone before the point where there was no hiding it anymore. What price are you willing to pay to be free? For Grace Jefferson, the main character in Kim McLarin’s Jump at the Sun, the hefty price tag may be worth it. As a wife and mother of two, Grace is destined to relive the pasts of her mother and grandmother. The question for her is which one. As both women’s lives are revealed through brilliantly written flashbacks and character dialogue, the reader learns why one selflessly sacrificed everything for her children and why the other didn’t. The two women’s actions ultimately lead Grace to a decision that will not only affect her, but also her family lineage.

This book touched me in a personal way because I have seen through my own family how one choice can radically change an entire generation. I was completely intrigued by the social issues in the story. Each one, from slavery to economic status, played an intricate part in the personal development, or lack thereof, for each character in the book. My grandmother always said, “We all are who we are for a reason.” Kim McLarin demonstrates the realness of that statement.

Although some may be instantly drawn to the books major themes of the harsh realities of motherhood, family life, or social structure, I walked away pondering how one decision can influence future generations.

Jump at the Sun shows the power of one’s choice. How it can build or destroy and regardless of what we think, it is never just about us.
